At 20
Funny thing, I started writing today
A free verse letter to my son
Finally, I know what to say
He creates my inspiration
And stimulates my imagination
It’s innate, his own special way
He is 20 years old and ahead of the game
But wonders what the world has in store
I’m 45 and doing the same
When he gets a little, he always wants more
He’ll do just fine, he’ll make his name
Like an eagle I know he will soar
His journey’s just started
From our house he departed
He has actually turned 21
Now don’t get out smarted
And don’t be retarded
I keep my eye on my only son
I know he’s cool headed and always strong hearted
But it’s over when the damage is done
I’ve been proud of his choices
And the opinions he voices
Did I mention? He plays the drums
He’s a scholar a worker and surely no shirker
And he does not hang out with bums
I even like all of his chums
